Edward's Stories # 12
After the weekly Monday morning meeting
Edward and Sarah went for a walk
In the park nearby the office.
They both discovered
Often the conversation flows
Even more freely in the open air.
A beautiful day
Blue skies, white clouds.
…
Edward shared his discovery
While walking on Saturday
With Athena, the border collie.
You were so right, Sarah
needed to discover by myself
And then understand the impact
We have on the emotions of others.
We all have.
Sarah, thank you
I now realize
The first responsibility I have as leader
Is that of Chief Emotions Officer.
…
Sarah smiled
And then asked
…
Edward isn’t there anything else
You discovered this weekend?
Edward looked surprised at Sarah …
How did she know? How could she know?
…
Yes, Sarah, indeed there is
…
I [finally] realized the origin
Of life’s quality.
At home the same applies
We influence the emotions
Of others by who we are
And how we show up.
Our weekend was different
Because I was.
Thank you, thank you Sarah.
Yesterday evening
In the Theatre of my Mind
I reinforced my learnings.
…
You allow me to take this
One step further, Edward?
Of course, Sarah
Please do so.
…
Can you imagine
The first thing your co-workers do
When they see you in the morning
Being it in person or by video?
No?
…
They check your mood …
And based on their read
Decide what kind of day it will be.
It is called Emotional Contagion
A transfer of feelings to others
And heavily impacts productivity.
Well …
That is something
To think about further.
…
Leaders should not come to the office
Nor interact with co-workers
Or do business when in a bad mood.
…
Edward and Sarah
Walked in silence …
Then Edward thought out loud …
Sarah, we can work on this
From both angles:
Leaders’ emotions
And
Co-workers [in] dependence.
Let’s walk again in two days
And discuss next steps
I’m ready to put these insights into action
Help our team thrive.
I already have some ideas
Linking my emotions and actions
To the betterment of the team
Edward said smiling.
Thank you, thank you Sarah.
P.S.
How aware are you of your impact on your co-workers’ emotions,
And how can you cultivate a better atmosphere?
